Writing Your Own Song ?

A useful chord chart to get you started

Our song writing Video lesson and 5 step guide discuss that when writing your own song, you should select and use chords from the correct key and scale.  This chart does not provide a definitive list of all chords linked to relevant scales.  It serves to help you get started by defining some 3 finger open chords for each scale.

Major

Key

 Notes in scale Some 3 finger open chords
CC  D  E  F  G  A  B C  Dm  Em  Fmaj7  G   Am
GG  A  B  C  D  E  F# G  Am   C      D      Em
DD  E  F# G  A  B C# D  Em   G      A
AA  B C#  D E F# G# A    D    E
EE F# G# A B C# D# E    A
FF G A Bb C D EFmaj7    Am    C    Dm

 Note

The open chords in each scale can be increased by for example use of suspended (sus) chords and (add) chords liked to relevant major chord

Examples;

Where A can be used also include Asus2 etc
Where D                                                Dsus2, Dsus4
Where C                                                Cadd9
